Security grades

Matched to the risk, not oversold

Intruder alarms in the UK are graded 1 to 4 under PD 6662 and BS EN 50131. The grade is set by what is being protected and how determined a burglar is likely to be. Insurers sometimes specify one.

Grade1

Low risk. Rarely the right choice for a property worth protecting.

Grade2

Most homes and many small shops and offices.

Most common
Grade3

Higher risk commercial premises and high value homes, often an insurer requirement.

Grade4

Very high risk sites. Specialist systems for specialist premises.

What gets fitted

A typical system

  • Control panel and keypad by the door you use, with fobs or a code.
  • Movement detectors covering the routes in, chosen to ignore pets where needed.
  • Door and window contacts on the ground floor and the back door.
  • External siren in clear view, because a visible bell box puts people off.
  • App control so you know it is set and get told if it goes off.
  • Optional monitoring through an Alarm Receiving Centre.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

How much should a burglar alarm cost?
A wireless alarm for a typical house costs less to fit than a wired one in a commercial unit, and the grade, the number of detectors and whether it is monitored all change the price. We survey first and give a fixed written quote, so the figure you agree is the figure you pay.
Wired or wireless, which is better?
Neither is better everywhere. Wired is ideal in a new build or during a renovation, and the detectors never need batteries. Wireless is quicker to fit in a finished house with no mess, and modern wireless kit is reliable. We will recommend one for your property and tell you why.
Can I set the alarm from my phone?
Most systems we fit now come with an app, so you can set and unset the alarm, see which zone triggered and get a notification on your phone. We set it up with you at handover.
Do you service alarms you did not install?
Yes. We service and repair existing intruder alarms from most major manufacturers. If the panel is too old to get parts for, we will tell you and price a replacement.
